Introductory Professional Term (IPT) 5 Weeks

The Introductory Professional Term (IPT) consists of

  • on campus-courses;
  • two guided observation days;
  • and a five week field experience

Guided Observation Days

The two guided observation days are an opportunity for you to understand the connection between your IPT course content and the field experience more fully and to be better prepared for all aspects of your five-week field experience.  See the student handbook (see link below) for a complete description of the two guided observation days, and expectations of pre-service teachers.

IPT Observation Days: Pre-Service Teacher Handbook

Field Experience

The field experience is designed to give you, the Pre-service Teacher, an opportunity to merge theory with practice in a school setting. With the support of your Mentor Teacher and University Facilitator, you will gain experience in:

  • Planning instruction
  • Teaching lessons
  • Managing your classroom
  • Tailoring your instruction to meet the learning needs of all your students
  • Assessing student progress

The University of Alberta expects students in their IPT Field Experience to

  • Provide a letter of introduction prior to the Field Experience
  • Create and maintain a planbook
  • Keep written Professional Reflections
  • Provide daily lesson plans
  • Be involved with a School Project
  • Be responsible for teaching up to 50%

The links on the left outline what you can expect each week during your IPT. Please be aware that these are guidelines that you, your Mentor Teacher and your University Facilitator may modify somewhat to meet your needs.
