Advanced Professional Term (APT) 9 Weeks

The Advanced Professional Term (APT) consists of both on-campus courses and a 9 week field experience.

Now that you have gained experience teaching in your IPT, this field experience gives you, the Student Teacher, the opportunity to further develop your teaching knowledge and skills. In collaboration with your Mentor Teacher and University Facilitator, you will gain experience in:

  • Planning and teaching lessons and units
  • Individualizing your teaching to meet the diverse learning needs of all your students
  • Managing your classroom
  • Assessing student progress
  • Incorporate issues of management, planning, and assessing student learning

The University of Alberta expects students in their APT Field Experience to

  • Provide a letter of introduction prior to the Field Experience
  • Create and maintain a planbook
  • Keep written Professional Reflections
  • Provide daily lesson plans
  • Be involved with a whole school project
  • Be involved with unit planning
  • Be responsible for teaching up to 80%

The links on the left outline what you can expect each week during your APT. Please be aware that these are guidelines that you, your Mentor Teacher and your University Facilitator may modify somewhat to meet your needs.
